The 2011 National Scrabble Champion is Nigel Richards, who successfully defended his 2010 title and won the $10,000 grand prize. Richards, 44, finished the five-day tournament with a record of 22-9 and a point differential of +1532.
Second place went to Kenji Matsumoto (22-9, +1186) of Aiea, Hawaii, while Brian Bowman (22-9, +1028) of Villa Hills, Kentucky, finished third.
Richards -- a New Zealand security analyst who lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- also won the National Championship in 2008, and he was World Scrabble Champion in 2007. He is only the second three-time National Champion; the other is Joe Edley.
In his final match, Richards' highest-scoring words were SCHmEAR (+95), LOAMIER (+78) and TAXIES (+68). Over the course of all 31 rounds, he averaged 434 points per game.
