In a recent roundtable discussion at The Opinionated Gamers, a group of writers tackled this question: "Is crowdsourcing [e.g., Kickstarter] good for our hobby?" It's an interesting discussion, as more and more games seek pre-production funding from gamers. My conclusion was this: "At least as far into the future as I can see, the vast majority of games sold will be developed via the traditional model. But having the Kickstarter option available is absolutely a good thing."
In late 2010, I interviewed Nicholas Vitek of Living Worlds Games who was seeking funding for 1955: The War of Espionage. That project was successfully funded and the game has been published. Filmmaker Lorien Green used Kickstarter to help fund her boardgame documentary Going Cardboard, which will be released on DVD soon.
