Hasbro was founded in 1923 by Henry and Merrill Hassenfeld (it was then known as Hassenfeld Brothers). The company originally sold textile remnants. It soon moved into manufacturing pencils and other school supplies; the first toy manufactured by the company was Mr. Potato Head in the late 1940s.

Today, a number of well-known game publishers are owned by Hasbro, including Avalon Hill, Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers and Wizards of the Coast.

Here's a quick look at how Hasbro came to be the company it is today, with numerous subsidiaries. A brief timeline organized by date is also available.

3M Games

In 1976, 3M Games was bought by Avalon Hill. In 1998, Avalon Hill was bought by Hasbro.

Avalon Hill

In 1998, Avalon Hill was bought by Hasbro. In 2004, Avalon Hill became a subsidiary of Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast division.

Cranium

In January 2008, Hasbro announced that it would acquire Cranium, Inc., publisher of more than four dozen games and a variety of books and toys.

Galoob / Lewis Galoob Toys

In 1998, Galoob was bought by Hasbro.

Kenner Products / Kenner Parker Toys

In 1987, Kenner Parker Toys was bought by Tonka. In 1991, Tonka was bought by Hasbro.

Milton Bradley

In 1984, Milton Bradley was bought by Hasbro.

Parker Brothers

In 1968, Parker Brothers was bought by General Mills. In 1985, Parker Brothers was spun off with Kenner Products, which became Kenner Parker Toys. In 1987, Kenner Parker Toys was bought by Tonka. In 1991, Tonka was bought by Hasbro.

Playskool

In 1968, Playskool was bought by Milton Bradley. In 1984, Milton Bradley was bought by Hasbro.

Tiger Electronics

In 1998, Tiger Electronics was bought by Hasbro.

Tonka

In 1991, Tonka was bought by Hasbro.

TSR

In 1997, TSR was bought by Wizards of the Coast. In 1999, Wizards of the Coast was bought by Hasbro.
