Coolest Monopoly Editions

Monopoly is one of those games that many people are familiar with. One way to breathe new life into this classic is to play it with a new theme -- such as Harley Davidson Monopoly, NFL Monopoly or even U.S. National Parks Monopoly. Dozens upon dozens of Monopoly editions have been published; these are my picks for the coolest. Some of these editions even include a special rule or two.

1. Disney Monopoly

The playing pieces for this game include Snow White, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Mowgli, Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp, and Alice (from "Alice in Wonderland"). The houses and hotels are replaced by cottages and castles. And, of course, all the property names are given a Disney spin.

2. Powerpuff Girls Monopoly

The happy city of Townsville is the setting for this edition, in which Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup can compete against Professor Utonium, the Mayor, and Mrs. Kane to see who is Townsville's biggest real estate mogul. Buildings and skyscrapers replace houses and hotels.

3. Golf Monopoly

When you can't get out to your favorite course, this edition lets you buy and sell courses like Pebble Beach, Kingsmill, Spyglass, and Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Houses and hotels become caddyshacks and clubhouses, with pewter tokens like a golf cart and a caddy.

4. I Love Lucy Monopoly

Classic episodes of "I Love Lucy" take the place of Boardwalk, Park Place and the other properties in this edition. Pink dice and pewter tokens that include Lucy's bottle of Vitameatavegamin add to the Lucy theme. The board includes original photos from the show.

5. Simpsons Monopoly

Do you want to own Moe's? How about the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant? The pewter playing pieces feature Bart, Homer, Kang the alien, Blinky the three-eyed fish, Santa’s Little Helper (the family dog), and Jebediah Springfield. Houses and hotels make way for monorail stops and full-blown monorail stations.

6. Wizard of Oz Monopoly

Build farmhouses and Emerald City Palaces as you move around the board as Dorothy and Toto, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, Dorothy's house in a twister, or the Ruby Slippers. A great gift for any fan of the classic 1939 film.

7. Marvel Comics Monopoly

Put on your superhero costume for this one, which has the traditional properties replaced by first edition comic books. Spider Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor are among the heroes honored with pewter tokens in this version of Monopoly.

8. Scooby Doo Monopoly

Chance and Community Chest are replaced by "Zoinks!" and "Ruh Roh!" cards; and the pewter figures represent the five crime-stoppers and the Mystery Machine. Acquire the properties owned by masked monsters, then convert them to a fast food franchise with Snack Shacks and Dine and Dash Diners.

9. .com Monopoly

Almost all of the Web site properties on this board still exist, but the prices now seem a little outrageous. $320 million for Lycos? But it's a fun high-tech spin on the traditional game. The player pieces are all tech-related, and it's even more fun to toss around Monopoly money when it's counted in the millions.

10. Make Your Own Opoly

So none of these editions appeal to you? With this game, you can make your own version of Monopoly. Replace Boardwalk with Aunt Betty's Bathroom if you want to!
